Fixing an iPhones vibrating mechanism

The other day my iPhone (2g) started rattling, and whenever it vibrated I could hear the piece moving around somewhere inside the phone where it was not supposed to be. After a trip to the apple store, and  having discovered that I should have purchased the apple protection plan, I decided to fix it myself.

After looking up a couple of tutorials for how to disassemble an iPhone I grabbed some tools and went at it.

For those of you who are in this situation and want to fix it, here are the steps:

1. Take of the black rubber piece on the bottom of the back panel (slide some sort of prying tool around the edge where it meets the back cover.)

2. Take out the three small screws (one on the left, one middle left, one right.)

3. Use a razor blade and slide it along the side from the base of the phone to the top and then around. Do this very slowly, and while you are sliding it, gently wiggle it to pry up the back until you hear the clips pop off. Go all the way around the phone until it is loose, and then pull it up from the bottom of phone. BE CAREFUL WHEN REMOVING IT BECAUSE THERE IS A CABLE ATTACHED AT THE TOP OF THE PHONE.

4. Look inside the case where the switches on the side are located. In the upper left corner there is a small spindle, and somewhere floating around should be the little semi-circular piece of metal that actually spins to vibrate the phone. Its this little guy that was rattling around.

5. Gently push the spindle down till it stops, and unscrew the tiny screw holding in the box the spindle comes out of.

6. Position the semi-circular piece of metal in the corner, and navigate it back onto the spindle. You may have to push the box that holds the spindle down a little bit to fit it (thats why we unscrewed it.)

7. Turn on your phone, hit the ring/silent switch and make sure it spins. If it does, snap the case back together, put back in all screws and you are good to go.

I hope this helps somebody, as this seems to be a common iPhone problem but I haven't seen any tutorials on how to do it.

Lots of music on the way!!

I have been busy for the past couple years working on multiple albums for a bunch of artists. Most of it is in the late production stage, ready for mixing, mastering and duplication. This is all going down through the company Shadow Tree Publishing, which is going to be incorporated in April 2009.

There are a couple of albums you should keep a heads up for. They start dropping in April 2009...

First: Post Human Era is releasing a long awaited LP. I would describe it as The Flaming Lips meets Nine Inch Nails meets pink floyd. A great blend of music with a very catchy, but not overly poppy sound. Post Human Era seems make music that applies to your life, no matter who you are. Its that certain type of artist that you swear is writing songs about what is going on inside of YOUR head.

Second: Optyma is releasing the debut instrumental LP. It encompasses a range of styles, and is a blend of hip hop, electronic, rock, and ambient, and will stimulate your mind with its sounds. Optyma is a wearer of many hats, some including producer, musician, engineer, and creates music that seems to open up your mind and get you thinking about things.

Third: Against The Spread is releasing the LONG awaited album Golden Statements album, which has been 4 years in the making. The group has gone through members over the years, but is standing to deliver a conscious yet creative blend of hip hop and electronic beats, with intriguing lyrical content slathered all over it.

Fourth: Wastelands is a musical endeavor committed to making original nether-worldly ethereal type rhythms and sounds, mixed in with a bit of acoustic instruments to keep it somewhat down to earth and musical. The groups sound ranges all over the place, but can at times be compared to Tipper, Portishead, Radiohead, and many others. The second album is a concept album that will follow a story, and will take you on a sonic adventure and paint images on the inside of your eyelids.

Fifth: Anu is a talented singer/songwriter along the lines of John Legend, John Mayer, Jack Johnson etc... His sound is a very musical blend that will make you picture a summer with no end in sight. His album will be released later in the year, but the single will be out early summer.

Sixth: Raelian is a dubstep producer capable of dazzling your mind with an array of meticulously sequenced drums and intricate synth leads cast amongst an evolving synthesized sound scape. This album has been in production for 3 years and conveys a ride of emotions and feelings in a less than 60 minute LP.

Seventh: The Shadow League is an electronic group based around the notion of breaking down ideas as they get stale, and reconstructing them into tomorrows train of thought. The music is a fusion of hip hop, electronic, orchestral, tribal, and any other genre you can imagine. Not only that but the music itself has a very transient nature, and will take you on a sonic ride full of plenty of aural excitement and surprises.

Eighth: Through The Windshield will be releasing their debut album at the far end of 2009. The band is a combination of several talented songwriters, and is along the lines of Chevelle, A Perfect Circle, and Muse. There are plenty of chunky guitar riffs and thunderous drum beats, mixed in with intricate bass lines and dynamic vocals.

Ninth: The innovative hip hop group dubbed NOV8RZ will be releasing their second album through Shadow Tree Publishing. The group, like many others, claims to be changing the face of hip hop. The difference is that they, unlike many others, actually make a wide variety of music that is not likely to be found in the drastically diverse world of hip hop. Although some of their songs resemble cliche hip hop, they stand to represent the diversity and expansion of the genre.

Tenth: The production team Unlimited Resonance is currently working on their album coming out later in 2009. In addition to producing a full length album, filled with a plethora of instruments and styles, they are also producing instrumentals for a number of Pop, Hip Hop, and R & B artists.

These albums, along with merchandise and other goodies, are going to be available through our website in both physical and digital form.  In addition to the website we will also be distributing through the major digital stores such as iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody, emusic, and others.  There are also music videos in production, which will be streamed for free, and be available as a purchasable download.

All of these groups (with the exception of NOV8RZ), are signing exclusive song writing contracts with Shadow Tree Publishing, and will be releasing material for years to come.  There is also an extensive tour being planned that will be bringing these groups to your home town, stay tuned for more info!

Its bloggin time

I have created this blog to help the world by sharing what I know. Topics will mostly consist of audio and music creation and production, as that is what I do, but it will range all over the place (depending on the day.) I hope this blog can help you learn (whether useful information or not.)
